A CO-FOUNDER of Extinction Rebellion was released from jail yesterday after spending four weeks in “dire conditions.”
Roger Hallam, 54, was among five activists charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage in late August ahead of a weekend of planned action by the Beyond Politics group.
Diana Warner, 61; Ferhat Ulusu, 42; Holly Brentnall, 29, and Steven Nunn, 56, were also arrested and charged.
London’s Wood Green Crown Court heard yesterday that the charge related to an alleged plan to damage the buildings of four trade unions, including Unite, Unison and the British Medical Association, with paint.
Prosecutor Diana Wilson said they planned to target the unions for failing to promote measures to prevent climate change.
Mr Hallam, Ms Warner and Mr Ulusu deny the charge and will appear again at Wood Green on November 27. Ms Brentnall and Mr Nunn have not entered pleas and will appear at the same court on November 6.
The court was told that Mr Hallam was being held in poor jail conditions, with cockroaches, which formed part of a successful application for bail.
Mr Hallam, one of the founders of global climate movement Extinction Rebellion, withdrew formal positions with the group earlier this year.
