Yousaf says racist abuse raised fears for his family

SNP leadership contender Humza Yousaf has spoken out about abuse he received in the early days of his campaign.

Having faced racist and Islamophobic abuse throughout his career, the Scottish Health Secretary spoke of his need to increase security at his home and how his concerns were no longer solely for himself but for his family as well.

Referring to his personal alarm, he said: “This is my life, this has been my life for 10 years and it’s normalised now. I don’t think too much about it, but I shouldn’t have to give one to my step-daughter.”

Mr Yousaf also spoke of his admiration for Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar as the first leader of a Scottish political party from an ethnic minority.

He said: “It’s actually not too difficult to call it [racism] out in wider society. Calling it out in your own party is tough, so when Anas did that, I took a lot of inspiration from that, I have to say.”
