Brazil’s court sentences five for their role in the January 8 coup attempt

BRAZIL’S Supreme Court has jailed five people for their involvement in the January 8 attempt to overturn Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva presidential election victory.

The conviction on Tuesday of Fabricio de Moura Gomes, Moises dos Anjos, Jorginho Cardoso de Azevedo, Rosana Maciel Gomes and Osmar Hilbrand brings the total number of defendants found guilty of crimes committed during the insurrection to 25.

They were found guilty of armed criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic state of law, coup d’etat and qualified damage as they sought to overturn far-right incumbant Jair Bolsonaro’s defeat by Lula.

However, the court was unable to reach a consensus on the length of their sentences.

The speaker, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, proposed imprisoning the accused with sentences ranging from 14 to 17 years in prison. He was supported by magistrates Carmen Lucia, Dias Toffoli and Luiz Fux.

Judges Cristiano Zanin and Edson Fachin supported penalties of between 11 and 15 years.

The sentencing votes by Gilmar Mendes, Kassio Nunes Marques, Andre Mendonca and court president Luis Roberto Barroso have yet to be put forward.

Arrested on January 8 by the military police inside the Planalto Palace, the presidential workplace, the five must also pay jointly, along with those previously found guilty, 30 million reais (around £5m) in compensation for the damage caused to public buildings.

Many suspect that Mr Bolsonaro, an avowed admirer of Brazil’s former military junta, the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and ex-US president Donald Trump, helped to instigate the violence.

In September, President Lula said that his predecessor was “involved up to his teeth” in the conspiracy to topple his new government.

Mr Bolsonaro denies the allegation.
