PAUL DONOVAN recommends an inspiring musical account of political and family divisions within the movement for women’s rights
The company in Sylvia [Manuel Harlan]

Sylvia
Old Vic Theatre, London

THIS is a show bursting with life and energy from start to finish that tells the story of the suffragettes’ bitter struggle for the vote and the familial divisions that developed within the movement.

Sharon Rose (Sylvia Pankhurst) and Beverley Knight (Emmeline Pankhurst) star in this explosive musical production, depicting the life of suffragette and socialist Sylvia Pankhurst.

Brilliantly directed by Kate Price, the production uses hip hop, soul, rap and funk to tell the story and the plot moves rapidly along, with electrifying numbers, written by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde.
