21ST-CENTURY POETRY Gross Negligence Manslaughter by Dan Pounds

With their cack-handed response
to this vapour-footed virus
are this feckless government
guilty of GNM?

Ask the interviewed women
red-eyed, filling up
distraught: those care home workers
filmed in one indelible take.

Ask the stunned taxi driver
gazing long distance
mourning cabbie mates who are dead
for fuck’s sake.

Ask the man whose wife put on
her nurse's uniform last month
brushed her hair and went to work...

the man who now, every morning,
sets two cups by the kettle
before putting one cup back.

Dan Pounds writes poems and makes text-based art. 21st-century Poetry is edited by Andy Croft, email [email protected]
