Headline Numbers by Janet Harper

The headlines remind us
how many countries, how many dead
how many statements from heads of state
how many policies coming too late
how many words it takes to offend
how many times we say the same thing
how much despair there is to go round.

The headlines remind us
how much can sustain us
how many singing, how many pleading
how much we’re giving, how much we’re taking
how many shelves someone has stacked
how many hours they get paid for
how many workers need to be paid.

The headlines remind us
how many lives are fighting for air
how many beds we need to die in
how much we need that we’ve already squandered
how many nurses are leaving their children
how many doctors have already left
how many people they could have saved.
