21ST-CENTURY POETRY Incivism in the Rose Garden

‘Incivism’ is the neglect of one’s duty as a citizen

Instinct insists, in birch & iris,
distilling light in milky tints.

Instinct insists, this spring,
in child, in kinship.

Instinct inhibits insight,
dismissing pity.

Quisling linchpin,
his wits hiss, lips fizzing,

inflicting kicks.
His illicit grip is firing

in-fighting, his might
dims his glib king.

Think: crisis timing.
If his instinct risks killing –

indict him, his script,
his ‘instinct.’

Fiona Larkin organises innovative poetry events with Corrupted Poetry and her debut pamphlet, A Dovetail of Breath, is published by Rack Press. 21st-century Poetry is edited by Andy Croft, email [email protected]
