Picture This Jon Buck: Time Of Our Lives, Gallery Pangolin, London

AT FIRST sight, this free exhibition of work by Jon Buck gives the impression of an archaeological find.

Intriguing bronze artefacts — evidently not utilitarian — appear to be coloured by some unknown natural process. They’re covered with glyphs reminiscent of Celtic symbolism but which are actually undecipherable.

A clue to their meaning is found in Buck’s younger days when he worked as a bird-keeper at Bristol Zoo, an experience that inspired his interest in poetry, science and anthropology.

The glyphs are in fact spells and incantations to protect the sacred, harmonious equilibrium between nature and humanity which is now in such peril.

The earthy, organic patins are imbued with a mineral quality that draws the line between nature’s power and human will, urging a symbiotic coexistence which is not just desirable but existentially necessary.

In Taking the Toll, Buck employs the form of the bell to invoke the cultural ambiguity in meaning and usage.

“In many societies bells are rung joyously in celebration but at the same time they can also be tolled as dire warnings of imminent danger,” he says. “I would like my current work to embrace both these aspects.”

There’s a lacerating irony in the title of a work that appears to ridicule human vainglory and stupidity in equal measure.

Single-mindedly muscular and robust, though without menace, Buck’s works communicate a poetic censure by setting beauty against the beast of extinction.
