Comedy Review Sh!t Theatre: Drink Rum With Expats, Soho Theatre London

Maltese mayhem and mirth from anarchic duo

SH!T THEATRE — the anarchic Louise Mothersole and Rebecca Biscuit — scored a hit with their latest show at the Edinburgh fringe festival and now the political performance duo are taking it on a not-to-be missed tour.

Drink Rum With Expats is set in the very watering hole in Malta — The Pub — where actor Oliver Reed drank his last and it’s inspired by the time a local friend invited the pair to do a show in the Maltese capital Valetta in honour of it being awarded European City of Culture status last year.

Of course, the troublesome twosome steer well clear of any awkward references to Brexit, the migrant crisis and the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia — not.

Never one to shy away from politics, Sh!t Theatre’s previous productions have included their humorous indictment of London’s housing crisis, Letters To Windsor House, and the ironic Women’s Hour, a show commissioned by a man for his feminist festival.

Drink Rum With Expats is arguably their best yet, honing their established flair for high-octane theatre that includes projections, videos and pre-recorded interviews with the many characters they come across in The Pub.

Yet the light-heartedness has its biting moments as belly laughs occasionally turn sombre tones when referencing the Syrian refugee crisis. As one man tells them in a pre-recorded interview: “If you’re rich you’re an expat, if you’re poor you’re an immigrant.”

Yet the darker moments don’t threaten to overshadow what is undoubtedly one of the most inventive and fun shows of the year. And, who knows, if you’re lucky you may even get a free shot of rum.

Runs at Soho Theatre until October 19, then tours until next year, details: shittheatre.co.uk
