21st Century Poetry A Tory defector's Maiden Speech to the Parliamentary Labour Party

by John Pinkerton

‘Greetings, comrades
And thank you for
That standing ovation
I find myself
In a new situation

Perhaps, I’d better
Explain to you
That I think the Red Wall
Isn’t really blue

Oh, and my defection
Has got nothing whatsoever to do
With my majority of
Four hundred and two

My previous votes
As a Tory MP
With three-line whips
Were deemed necessary

As you know
You have to toe the line
And I’m not a Corbyn man
Which you’ll regard as fine

It’s not that my politics
Have become closer to yours
But that yours have
Become closer to mine.’

John Pinkerton is a former printer and union activist. He is currently a jazz musician, poet, and a political activist for peace and justice. 21st-century Poetry is edited by Andy Croft, email [email protected].
