Child confirmed dead after blaze rips through overcrowded Greek refugee camp

AT LEAST three people, including a child, are believed to have been killed when fire ripped through the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos today.

It is unclear how the blaze started, but the flames were fanned by strong winds and firefighters struggled to reach the affected area due to overcrowding, according to local media reports.

“The fire trucks can’t get through,” a fire official said. The blaze was brought under control yesterday afternoon and the camp was evacuated.

The Hellenic fire service confirmed yesterday afternoon that a child had been found dead during operations to extinguish the blaze.

Built to house no more than 5,400 people, the camp houses more than 20,000 refugees in cramped and squalid conditions.

Last year, there were riots there after an Afghan woman burnt to death in a fire.

As many as 15,000 refugees are currently trapped at the Turkish-Greek border and receiving brutal treatment from both countries’ security forces after Ankara facilitated the migrants’ departure and Greece refused them entry.
