Commons beats Lords amendment on 'meaningful' EU vote

A LORDS amendment to give MPs a “meaningful vote” on the final Brexit deal was rejected in the Commons yesterday by a majority of 16.

The EU Withdrawal Bill amendment — backed by pro-Remain Tory Dominic Grieve in order to block a “no deal” Brexit — was rejected by 319 votes to 303.

PM Theresa May saw off a rebellion with a last-minute concession to pro-EU Tory MPs.

They were told that a ministerial statement to be issued today would allow Speaker John Bercow to decide whether they would get a vote in the event of no deal.

The concession was accepted by Mr Grieve, who was met with jeers of “shame” from opposition benches when he announced that he would vote against his own motion.

Tory whips also disregarded a parliamentary convention that allows sick MPs to have their votes “nodded through” from ambulances and cars in the Parliamentary courtyard.

Bradford West Labour MP Naz Shah arrived in a wheelchair with a sick bucket on her lap to vote. Pregnant Lib Dem deputy leader Jo Swinson also voted despite being past her due date.

Six Conservative MPs rebelled against the government to support the amendment. They were Heidi Allen, Ken Clarke, Phillip Lee, Antoinette Sandbach, Anna Soubry, and Sarah Wollaston.

Four MPs rebelled against Labour — Frank Field, Kate Hoey, John Mann and Graham Stringer — by rejecting the amendment.

The Bill will go back to the Lords in its latest stage of “parliamentary ping-pong.”

Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer called the result “disappointing.”

He said: “Theresa May is forced once again to try to buy off her own MPs at the 11th hour.

“Labour has long argued that Parliament should have a proper role in the Brexit negotiations and a meaningful vote on the terms upon which we leave the EU.”
