Public Ownership Corbyn promises workers’ control

JEREMY CORBYN will announce Labour’s plans for modern, worker-led public ownership today and recommit the party to renationalising Royal Mail.

Speaking at the conference of communication workers’ union the CWU, the Labour leader will declare the 20th century model of top-down nationalisation to be “history.”

He will also announce proposals to set up a post bank under Post Office ownership, following the examples of France, Italy and New Zealand.

Mr Corbyn will say: “Public ownership for the 21st century is about adapting for the future in a way that works for the many not the few.

“Everybody agrees that it is only sensible to give experts a significant say in the running of any industry or service.

“Labour knows that those experts are not distant managers or remote bureaucrats but you, the workforce at all levels, the people that actually create our society’s wealth and get the job done.

“Who knows more about the day-to-day running of an industry? The staff who are on the front line doing their job day in, day out or a shareholder whose control of a company comes from the size of their cash flow and not the extent of their expertise?”

Mr Corbyn will also unveil Labour plans to create four extra bank holidays for British workers, on the feast days of St David, St Patrick, St George and St Andrew.

He will tell CWU conference delegates that, under a future Labour government, St George’s Day “will be a day where we can all show our pride and celebrate our country’s tradition of fairness, inclusivity and social justice.”

Labour will seek the support of the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish governments for the same four holidays to be enjoyed across the UK.
