CWU Conference 2024 CWU news in brief: April 25, 2024

FOND FAREWELL: Working-class hero and lifelong CWU member Andy Kerr was given a standing ovation as he made an emotional retiring speech.

Warm tributes were paid to the deputy general secretary and former union president, who famously informed Sir Keir Starmer at a Labour NEC meeting that he would never have his respect.

Mr Kerr said it was absolutely crucial that the union wins the argument on the proposed changes to the Royal Mail’s universal service obligation and against the potential takeover by Czech billionaire investor Daniel Kretinsky, whom he called “just another arsehole” threatening to destroy the service.

REDUNDANCY: Posties are being forced to “work until they drop” after their voluntary redundancy agreement was slashed from a maximum of 104 weeks to a 39-week “pittance,” the Communication Workers Union’s annual conference heard today.

A motion calling on the union’s postal executive to renegotiate a better agreement with Royal Mail was passed.

TASK AHEAD: The Communication Workers Union is to produce a report on what it sees as the way forward for postal services, consulting branches and divisions within the next six months, according to a motion passed today.
