Racing Difficult to find a winner at the Cambridgeshire Handicap today

A HUGE day at Newmarket this afternoon with the cavalry charge that is the Cambridgeshire Handicap due off at 3.40 alongside a number of group events, the most enticing of which has to be the group one Middle Park Stakes at 3.00.

The nap of the day though runs at Haydock where I expect BAYDAR (nap) to finally take advantage of his declining handicap mark in the one-and-three-quarter mile handicap at 4.25.

His last two runs have offered huge encouragement that he can return to winning form for the first time in two years.

He was a huge eye-catcher at the back end of August at Hamilton and then was a shade unlucky not to get up close home when finishing strongly behind Ravenous at Chester over half a furlong further.

Now down to a handicap rating of just 89 (his last win came off 99) I think he looks the value call to see off the progressive three-year-old Surya along with bottom-weight Dominating.

The Cambridgeshire Handicap looks as tough as ever with no fewer than 35 horses flying down the nine furlongs of the Rowley Mile track and it could pay to wait until the Silver Cambridgeshire (yesterday) and indeed other races at the meeting are run to decide where the quickest part of the track was.

That was the case last year when the stands’ side ruled supreme, but for some unknown reason the majority of the jockeys on the fancied horses made a bee line for the far side of the track.

Value is always the name of the game for this event run over an intermediate trip and I have always thought that this set up would suit SABADOR, who has run some fine races in the top seven furlong handicaps without looking as though he has the pace to win at that distance.

He is certainly bred to be well suited by further and could be worth an each-way flutter at around 33/1. But make sure you shop around for each-way terms as a couple of bookmakers went first seven last year and I suspect a few may even offer more this time around.

Of his 34 rivals, I think that Zwayyan under Jason Watson should also go well along with former winner Third Time Lucky and Afaak.

The Middle Park Stakes looks a cracking renewal and I really like the claims of JASH (nb) to over turn Ten Sovereigns.

The last named put up a sparkling time figure when landing a Group Three in Ireland, but with Mr O’Brien in charge his odds look a little bit tight to me.

Jash has to improve a bundle to match him on bare form, but has won both of his races with any amount in hand and worked superbly last week and looks an each-way play to nothing against the market leader.

I was keen on backing Nebo in the concluding handicap at 5.55, but the ground may just have dried up a wee bit too much for him and the each-way play has to be SILVER LINE who simply does too much in the early part of his races to stay 10 furlongs and this fast run affair on this stiff track should be perfect for him as long as he settles through the early part of the contest.

Elsewhere, COPPER KNIGHT could be the each-way call in the valuable sprint handicap at Haydock (3.15), while I fancy big runs from each of RED LABEL in the 6.45 at Chelmsford and the nicely weighted CHESSMAN in the seven furlong event due off at 7.15.
