Easter holiday chaos as Gatwick workers announce pensions strike

GATWICK airport faces holiday disruption with operations workers set to strike, Unite said today.

More than 100 Red Handling staff, including baggage handlers and flight dispatchers, will take industrial action across the bank holiday weekend over several issues, including pensions not being paid.

The union warned the action would see flight delays, cancellations, long queues at check-in and baggage delays.

Airlines Norwegian, Delta, TAP and Air Peace will be affected.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Workers have had enough of Red Handling playing fast and loose with their retirement plans and waiting weeks for pay they are rightfully owed for their hard work.”

The union’s regional officer David Taylor added: “The way the workers have been treated by Red Handling has been nothing short of a disgrace.”

Strike action will run from April 18-22.

A spokesperson for London Gatwick said thousands of passengers would be affected by the strike and it was supporting the airlines impacted.

“We are hopeful a resolution can be reached ahead of the proposed industrial action,” it added.
