England learn route to Women’s World Cup after play-off draw

ENGLAND will play Greece in the first round of their Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off in October.

Holders Spain topped the Lionesses’ group earlier in qualifying to book their place directly in next year’s tournament in Brazil alongside Denmark, France and Germany.

The play-offs, two rounds of home and away ties, will determine seven of the eight remaining Uefa places, while the final spot will be decided through an inter-confederation play-off.

The Republic of Ireland will take on Kazakhstan, Wales play Albania, Scotland face the Czech Republic and Northern Ireland have drawn Portugal.

England boss Sarina Wiegman said: “We knew what the play-offs would look like and, while we’re pleased with the draw against Greece, the focus now is on making sure we’re really well prepared.”

Based on their group-stage league and finish, England, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales will play their second legs at home, while Northern Ireland will be on the road for their second match.

Round one begins in October, and round two takes place in November and December.

Should England, the 2023 World Cup runners-up, advance to round two, they will play the winner of Slovakia vs Ukraine, while the Republic of Ireland would face Belgium or Poland.

Northern Ireland would play Croatia or Iceland, Wales would face Romania or Norway, and Scotland could see themselves taking on either Lithuania or Sweden.

The seven best-ranked winners from round two qualify for next year’s finals, while the remaining winner will still need to win the inter-confederation play-off.

European teams enter the second round of that play-off, taking place in February 2027.
