Exam bosses must re-apply for their jobs, say Scottish Labour

SCOTTISH Labour will attempt to force bosses at Scotland’s exams body to reapply for their jobs at its successor.

The Scottish government announced in 2021 that the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) would be replaced following a series of marking scandals.

Fours years on, the Education (Scotland) Bill aims to do that, but Scottish Labour education spokeswoman Pam Duncan-Glancy fears SQA bosses may simply transfer to its successor, Qualifications Scotland (QS), rendering the process “little more than a rebranding exercise.”

Seeking to block this, Labour will move an amendment — one of 350 —  at Holyrood’s education committee next week to force ministers to reappoint the QS board in its first six months.

Ms Duncan-Glancy said: “The SQA has been hit by one scandal after another, but it has been emboldened and defended by [First Minister] John Swinney and the SNP at every turn.

“Genuine reform is desperately needed.

“Scottish Labour has lodged amendments to strengthen the voices of pupils, parents and teachers, restore accountability in our education system, and ensure the SQA is well and truly abolished.”

The Scottish government was contacted for comment.
