World in Brief October 9 2018

PAKISTAN: The Supreme Court has postponed a decision on whether to put a Christian woman to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed.

Asia Bibi, a farmworker, offered water to her colleagues one day in 2009 and two refused to drink from a container a Christian had touched.

This led to an argument, after which the two accused her of blasphemy against Islam. Her lawyer says the witnesses’ accounts differ in important respects and are not reliable.

TURKEY: Saudi Arabia’s ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry yesterday over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Mr Khashoggi has not been seen since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul a week ago, and Turkish police say they believe he was murdered there, presumably for writing articles critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

MACEDONIA: Former interior minister Gordana Jankuloska was sentenced to six years in prison yesterday over the purchase of a luxury bullet-proof car while she was in government.

The court found she unlawfully influenced officials to recommend the 2012 purchase of a €600,000 (£530,000) Mercedes for the use of then prime minister Nikola Gruevski. Ms Jankuloska remains free pending an appeal.

Mr Gruevski was sentenced to two years in jail earlier this year in the same case.

CHINA: Interpol president Meng Hongwei, a vice-minister for public security, is under investigation for bribery and other crimes.

A government statement said Mr Meng was guilty of “wilful” behaviour and had only himself to blame for his predicament. It added that all officials should “maintain the political quality of being absolutely loyal to the [Communist] Party.”

Interpol says he has resigned from his post there, which was based in France, where his wife remains. He was arrested on a trip home.
