Trade unionists will gather in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire tonight to celebrate 135 years of struggle by the district’s trades union council, writes Morning Star northern reporter PETER LAZENBY

ON SEPTEMBER 24 1885, a band of trade unionists gathered in the Chess Tavern in High Street in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire to found Huddersfield Trades Union Council.

In the late 19th century Huddersfield was at the beating heart of the old West Riding’s textile industry. The industry employed hundreds of thousands.

The trade unionists at the Chess Tavern were still smarting from a defeat at the hands of the textile employers.
