Coast-to-coast on two wheels for the People's Daily

Pedal4Progress is back in the saddle – raising funds and promoting the Reach for the Star campaign, writes CAROLYN JONES

READERS of the Morning Star will recall that since 2013 Merseyside and Manchester Morning Star Readers and Supporters Groups have been organising annual Pedal4Progress cycle rides to raise much-needed cash for the paper and other good causes.

This year, in celebration of our 10th anniversary, Pedal4Progress is going back to its roots — adapting our original coast-to-coast route and with many previous participants joining us in our socialist cycle challenge.

This year we have a particularly strong cycle team — including the Morning Star’s very own Bernadette Keaveney, our circulation manager and regular author of this column — together with the chair of the management committee, Bob Oram.

We also have a dedicated logistics team whose jobs include ferrying the equipment, cooking up snacks along the route and tending to any injured cyclists. Guess which crew I’m in!

And to celebrate this 10th anniversary we have set ourselves an extraordinary target of raising £10,000 — all of which will go to support the wonderful work of our “daily miracle.” We have achieved that figure before and hopefully we can do it again this year.

But it’s not just money we will be looking for. As we cycle through Merseyside, Manchester, Barnsley, Selby and Hull, we will be holding events, meeting comrades and friends and doing our bit to ensure each rider recruits a new reader or two along the way.

And to catch the eye of any fellow travellers, we will be exhibiting the wonderful artwork of Hazel Roberts, on our banners, collection sheets and T-shirts.

Plus, there will be special merchandise this year to celebrate the 10th edition ride — which will be available through the Morning Star’s shop.

The ride will set off from Liverpool on July 26, passing through Manchester, stopping at Wortley Hall on the 27th, moving on to Selby on the 28th and finishing in Hull on the 29th.

But you don’t have to wait for the ride to start before showing your support. Feel free to dig deep now and give generously to encourage the riders on their way.

Bank transfers can be made to Merseyside Morning Star, sort code 60-83-01, account number 20428060. Please reference your donation P4P10.

Further reports from our leader Les Docherty, interviews with individual cyclists — including the Morning Star’s ambassador Maxine Peak — and pictures of P4P in action will be regularly reported in the Morning Star.

We hope we inspire other Readers and Supporters Groups to start their own local initiatives — go on, Reach for the Star!

Carolyn Jones is vice-chair of the Morning Star management committee and member of Merseyside Morning Star Readers and Supporters Group.
