The latest news from Syria, India, Germany, Spain and Thailand

SYRIA: US warplanes bombed the Ayash Camp in Syria today, killing six to 10 people, according to reports.

Washington said it was targeting militias linked to Iran and the raids were necessary to protect US personnel.

The US maintains an illegal military presence in Syria and exchanges regular “tit for tat” attacks with pro-government militias.

INDIA: Three air force officers have been fired for firing a missile into Pakistan in March.

An inquiry found that “deviation from the standard operating procedures” were responsible for the accident, a dangerous one given India and Pakistan are mutually hostile nuclear-armed states.

GERMANY: Lower Saxony has unveiled the world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger trains to run on non-electrified tracks.

They will replace diesel engines. The 14 trains use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity and were built by French company Alstom. Germany says hydrogen is a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

SPAIN: Lawyers for a gunman’s victims have condemned a decision to allow him to die through euthanasia before facing trial.

Eugen Sabau stormed his former workplace a year ago, shooting and wounding three people and a police officer.

He was shot by police and left with incurable quadriplegia, which entitled him to ask to be killed under Spanish law. He was put to death on Tuesday.

THAILAND: The Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha from his duties yesterday while it considers whether he was exceeded his term limit.

Mr Prayuth seized power in a military coup in 2014 and has now ruled for eight years, but his supporters say the eight-year limit only applies from its adoption in 2017 or even from his election win in 2019.
