THE government must intervene to standardise the price of lactose and dairy-free products, food workers said today.
BFAWU delegates accepted a motion recognising that the price of dairy alternatives was “inflated for profit” and any extra costs to consumers was unjustified.
Moving, health and safety rep Patrycja Grabowska explained that these were “not trendy alternatives” for many people, describing lactose free products as “medical necessities.”
She said: “Accessibility should never be treated like a luxury. We need these products to become more affordable for those who need them.”
Ms Grabowska said the production of these products lacked regulation and transparency, demanding the government step in to standardise the British dairy-free market.
West Yorkshire delegate Zeal Manchin agreed, adding that this motion was also “essential from an environmental” standpoint.
Pointing to the outsized impact the dairy industry has on the climate, he said making milk alternatives more affordable “helps reduce the hold that those industries have within that society.”
