Trade unions will stage a protest march and rally in Whitehall in solidarity with Ukraine

A HOST of trade unions are set to stage a protest march and rally in Whitehall tomorrow, to express solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.

Saturday’s demo, organised by the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign and endorsed by five Ukrainian union federations, will see several British unions — including GMB and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) — demand the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and a ceasefire.

Labour MPs Alex Sobel and Nadia Whittome are due to address the protest, which will begin in Parliament Square at noon and end with a rally outside Downing Street to demand that Tory ministers admit all refugees wanting to come to Britain without delay.

NUM general secretary Chris Kitchen said: “This is not just a fight over land, it’s a fight for sovereignty and democracy and one that we must ensure Ukraine wins.”

Speaking from Kiev, Mykhailo Volynets, chairman of the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine, said “military, financial, and humanitarian” assistance was needed.

Members of the Communication Workers Union, the University and Colleges Union, Civil Service union PCS, the Bakers’ Union, TSSA and Aslef will also attend.
