Oxford council to provide free period products across city

OXFORD city councillors have unanimously voted to provide free period products in the city.

After passing a motion on Monday, the council will work with period poverty charities and organisations in the city to provide free period products in public toilets and buildings, including the town hall and community centres.

Oxford has been rated second among the top 10 cities where women and girls are struggling to afford sanitary protection.

Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani of the Young Women’s Music Project, which delivers a volunteer-run distribution network in Oxford  called Wings, said: “We believe that providing free period products to the people of Oxford will support the mental and physical health of those who are most impacted by increase in costs of living.

“Everyone deserves the right to sanitary resources.”

Green Party councillor Rosie Rawle said: “Period poverty is a major issue facing millions of people across the country, and thousands in our city.

“Lack of access to period products can have a huge impact on the lives of women, girls, non-binary people and trans men who menstruate.

“It can lead to people wearing period products for too long and using unsuitable or unsafe alternatives.”
