Face-mask dodgers could face fine of over £3k as lockdown eases

New measures in England announced, including opening of more types of business

THE fine for repeatedly refusing to wear a face mask could rise to £3,200, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced today, ahead of a further easing of the lockdown tomorrow.

Face coverings are mandatory in England on public transport and in shops and museums, with some exemptions for children or on medical grounds.

People who refuse to wear a face covering could initially have been fined £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days. That penalty will now be doubled for each subsequent offence, up to a maximum of £3,200.

Organisers of illegal gatherings of more than 30 people could also face a £10,000 penalty, a No 10 source indicated. Police chiefs have promised more patrols following a spate of illegal raves during the heatwave.

The announcement of new enforcement measures coincided with Mr Johnson confirming that more types of business would be allowed to reopen.

From tomorrow, indoor entertainment venues can operate with socially distanced audiences and there will be piloting of some sporting events with limited numbers of spectators. Casinos, bowling alleys, skating rinks and soft play centres can also reopen.

“Close contact” beauty services such as facials, eyebrow threading and eyelash treatments can also restart, and wedding receptions with up to 30 guests will be permitted.

The changes will not apply where local lockdowns are in place.
