Haddad set for run-off after surging in Brazilian presidential polls

BRAZIL’s presidential election could see a second-round run-off between left-wing candidate Fernando Haddad and Jair Bolsonaro, with a new poll suggesting possible victory for the Workers Party candidate.

A poll by BTG Pactual indicates a surge in support for Mr Haddad, up by 7 per cent in the space of a week to 23 per cent.

Polls are showing the far-right candidate Mr Bolsanaro, who is recovering after being stabbed at an election rally earlier this month, leading on 33 per cent — not enough for a first-round victory.

Mr Haddad became the Workers Party candidate for the October 7 election after a court blocked the candidacy of the popular former president Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva, who is in prison on trumped-up corruption charges — branded “lawfare” — to prevent him from winning the ballot.

Mr Haddad is standing on a platform of investment in jobs and education. Polls suggest that he could pull off a narrow victory in the second round of voting.
