Imperialism to go 'on trial' in rallies against Assange extradition

FREE speech campaigners are organising two events in the coming week in protest at the possible extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be tried in the US.

The Imperialism on Trial – Free Julian Assange events will “document the crimes of imperialism in general and show solidarity with Julian and call for his immediate release,” organisers say.

Tuesday night’s rally will be hosted by Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges and Wednesday’s by former MP George Galloway.

Speakers include Vivienne Westwood, former Irish hunger striker Tommy Kearney, former US extradition defendant Lauri Love and journalist and Morning Star contributor John Wight.

Organiser Gregory Sharkey said speakers were driven by a “profound and sincere desire for an end to these endless wars of aggression and regime changes.

“There is a war being waged against journalism in general and on whistleblowers in particular. We require alternative media outlets such as WikiLeaks to do the job that the mainstream media aren’t doing.”

Both events take place at Crypt on the Green, Clerkenwell Close, London EC1R 0EA from 7-10pm. Tickets available on Eventbrite.
