PROMINENT Palestinian parliamentarian Khalida Jarrar, an outspoken critic of the Israeli occupation, had her detention without trial extended for the fourth time yesterday.
Authorities ruled that the Palestinian MP should be kept in prison, claiming that she poses “a tangible risk” to the public after she was arrested following a raid on her home in July last year.
At the time Israeli spy agency Shin Bet said she was held along with another Palestinian activist for “promoting terror activities,” although it did not release any details.
An Israeli Defence Force (IDF) statement said she was being held “on suspicion of involvement with terrorist activities and violent public disturbances.”
Ms Jarrar was taken into “administrative detention” for an initial six-month period, however has been held in an Israeli prison for more than a year without charge.
Ms Jarrar is a senior member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a Marxist group deemed a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US, Canada and the EU.
She was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006 and is Palestine’s representative in the Council of Europe.
Ms Jarrar has been banned from travelling outside the occupied territories since 1988 and was jailed for 15 months in December 2015 for membership of an illegal organisation and “incitement.”
The charges against her remain confidential and under Israeli law her detention can be extended indefinitely.
At least 13 Palestinian MPs are being held in Israeli prisons, nine of them without charge. Some Palestinian prisoners have been held in administrative detention for 11 years.
