LIVERPOOL successfully signed Mohamed Salah to a new long-term deal yesterday following his spectacular 32-goal league season.
Salah joined the Merseyside Reds for £34 million in June 2017, a bargain for what he would go for now after beating Tottenham’s Harry Kane to the Premier League Golden Boot award by scoring 32 goals and creating a new benchmark in a single 38-game season.
After helping Liverpool reach the Champions League final last season, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid, and the style he did it in, the Spanish giants were prancing around creating speculation that the former Chelsea attacker may be buying a one-way ticket to Spain.
But Liverpool and Salah have cut off any more rumours by agreeing a reported five-year contract, with no release clause, to keep him at Liverpool until 2023.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: “I think this news can be seen for what it is — rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season.
“It demonstrates two things very clearly also — his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him.
“We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions. We are working hard together to achieve this.”
The talent shown by the 26-year-old gave Egypt a bit of hope for the World Cup, but after picking up a shoulder injury in the Champions League final that ruled him out of Egypt’s opening game, scoring against both Russia and Saudi Arabia was not enough to keep his nation in the competition.
The expectation of Salah next season is high which will leave fans asking: Can he do it again or was it just a one off?
That can only be answered by one man and it can only be answered on the pitch.
