TRADE unionists, children and parents lobbied a meeting of Merthyr Tydfil Council in south Wales yesterday over plans to axe the district’s school breakfast clubs.
The council wants to close the clubs to save money, despite the fact that many parents rely on them to be able to work.
In addition, the clubs ensure that children who attend get a decent meal at the start of the school day.
Members of unions Unison, Unite and GMB who run the clubs have joined forces with parents and children to campaign against the plan.
Most of the 150 workers at the clubs are low-paid women and will face redundancy if the closures go ahead.
Unions say closure would be “devastating.”
The council is controlled by a group of independent councillors.
Labour is opposing the plan.
