Luton airport workers fight for better pay

LOW-PAID workers at Luton airport are to strike for a week against “a toxic combination of zero-hours contracts and the minimum wage.”

The workers are employed by contractor Clece Care Services to help passengers with mobility problems and are members of union Unite. They have voted to strike for a second time from November 8 to 15.

Cleaners at the airport are also voting on strike action.

Luton airport announced profits of nearly £40 million last year but its management has refused to intervene with the contractors.

Unite regional officer Jeff Hodge said: “It’s time for Luton airport to get its house in order. This year alone there have been five separate disputes over pay involving workers.

“The airport is suffering reputational damage.

“While three of the disputes were resolved after workers took a stand, the two disputes which remain unresolved involve the worst-paid and worst-treated workers at the airport.

“This is plain wrong and it’s time for action.”
