Maldives voters head to ballot in election closely watched by India and China

VOTERS in the Maldives took part in parliamentary elections today in a ballot closely watched by India and China, with both countries are hoping to strengthen their influence in the archipelago nation.

The results were expected after the Morning Star went to print.

The election of President Mohamed Muizzu last year increased rivalry with India due to the new leader’s pro-China stand and action to remove Indian troops stationed on one of the country’s islets.

But he has lost some of his allies in the parliament and more parties have entered the race for seats, meaning he faced a tough contest for a majority.

Six political parties and independent groups were fielding 368 candidates for 93 seats in parliament — six more than the previous sitting following adjustments that were made for growth in population.

About 284,000 people were eligible to vote and tentative results were expected to be announced late last night.
