CUBA elected Manuel Marrero Cruz yesterday as its first prime minister since 1976.

Mr Marrero Cruz was voted in by the National Assembly after being nominated by President Miguel Diaz-Canel.

He has served as tourism minister since 2004, “a position with which he was entrusted by our commander in chief, Fidel Castro Ruz,” as Mr Diaz-Canel said, and is credited with building links with foreign countries and companies that have hugely expanded the island’s tourism sector.
