Minister learnt of British Steel plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs in a press release

BUSINESS minister Nusrat Ghani revealed today that she learnt of British Steel’s £1.25 billion proposal to cut up to 2,000 jobs in Scunthorpe via a press release.

The company announced that it planned to close its blast furnaces and replace them with two electric arc furnaces “subject to appropriate support” from the British government on Tuesday.

Chief executive Xijun Cao said: “We have engaged extensively with the public and private sector to understand the feasibility of producing net zero steel with our current blast furnace operations. However, thorough analysis shows this is not viable.”

Answering questions by Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft, Ms Ghani told the Commons: “When the press release was put out by British Steel, it was the time I saw that press release as well.

“But we must recognise it was a proposal: many things have to fall into place for these proposals to become accurate plans, not only issues around planning but also for our negotiations to conclude as well.”
