More than 300 arrested at Capitol Hill protest over Brett Kavanaugh

CELEBRITIES Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski were among more than 300 people arrested in Washington on Thursday evening before a controversial vote in the United States Supreme Court.

Protesters at Capitol Hill demanded women’s voices be heard as they called on senators to reject the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of rape and sexual assault.

Banners were unfurled and a sit-in protest was held at the Senate office building in the US capital urging the appointment of Mr Kavanaugh to the country’s highest bench to be blocked.

The federal judge was accused by Dr Christine Blasey Ford of violently sexually assaulting her as a teenager.

Other women came forward with similar complaints leading to calls for his nomination to the Supreme Court and a job for life to be blocked.

Mr Kavanaugh denies the accusations and, when quizzed in the Senate last week, claimed the allegations were “revenge on behalf of the Clintons.”

Police confirmed that 302 people were arrested as thousands protested at the Hart Senate office building, with a number staging a sit-down protest with banners demanding “Justice Now.”

Initial voting was taking place as the Star went to print with the final poll held tomorrow.
