MPs HAVE accused the police of standing by while abuse and racism is hurled at them by aggressive protesters.
More than 50 cross-party MPs have written to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick to express their serious concerns about the deteriorating public order and security situation outside of Parliament.
It follows the verbal attack on Tory MP Anna Soubry, who was branded a “nazi” by a mob of so-called “Yellow Vest UK” protesters — attempting to hijack the high-vis movement for their far-right Brexit agenda — during an interview on College Green yesterday.
Protesters then mobbed the pro-EU MP as she attempted to make her way back into Parliament.
Left-wing journalist Owen Jones also faced abuse from the same group yesterday. Police are investigating whether any criminal offence was committed and no arrests have been made.
“It is ... utterly unacceptable for members of Parliament, journalists, activists and members of the public to be subject to abuse, intimidation and threatening behaviour and indeed potentially serious offences while they go about their work,” the letter said.
Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery said: “Only a matter of years ago Jo Cox, an MP who devoted her short time in Parliament to bringing people together, was murdered in a politically motivated attack by a member of the far right. We all have a duty, whether locally or nationally, to ensure that our politics remains open and that we are all free to express our opinions without fear of harassment or worse.”
MPs said they had repeatedly raised concerns with police officers and officials as the “situation worsened.”
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said the police presence around Parliament had been beefed up following the incidents.
