MPs express ‘extreme concern’ over hunger strike
John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington speaks at a anti-racism rally and march in central London organised by Stand Up To Racism and trade unions, March 16, 2024

LEFT MPs have expressed “extreme concern” over the fact that remand prisoners associated with Palestine Action have felt forced to go on hunger strike.

Six people charged with offences related to direct-action operations linked to the now-proscribed Palestine Action have been on hunger strike for a month.

Their demands include being released on bail until their trial, not expected for at least a further year, as well as the removal of the proscription of Palestine Action and a guarantee of a fair trial.

John McDonnell was joined by Labour MPs Neil Duncan-Jordan and Brian Leishman, as well as the currently whipless Diane Abbott in tabling a Commons motion calling on Justice Secretary David Lammy “to intervene urgently to ensure their treatment is humane and their human rights are upheld.”

Jeremy Corbyn has also written to Mr Lammy pressing for him to intervene in the case.
