Ocasio-Cortez vows to vote against Democratic leader's austerity bid

LEFT-WING US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez vowed on Wednesday to vote against Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on her first day in Congress.

Diehard neoliberal Ms Pelosi, who was poised to be elected as House of Representatives minority speaker yesterday as the Star went to press, plans to push through severe austerity measures as part of a House rules package.

One of the measures she hopes to introduce requires all new government spending to be offset by either budget cuts or tax increases. The policy is referred to in the US as “pay as you go” or “paygo.”

Ms Ocasio-Cortez vowed to reject it, writing on Twitter: “Tomorrow I will also vote No on the rules package, which is trying to slip in #PAYGO.

“PAYGO isn’t only bad economics … it’s also a dark political manoeuvre designed to hamstring progress on healthcare.”
