Men's Football Derby duo handed community orders for drunk-driving

DERBY pair Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett avoided prison today after they admitted drink-driving over a crash which left their club captain seriously injured.

Both were detained by police after the incident near Derby early on September 24.

Midfielder Lawrence and Forward Bennett admitted drink-driving and fleeing the scene when they appeared at Derby Magistrates’ Court.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffee had warned that a prison sentence was an option but a 12-month community order was instead issued to the pair.

Two-year driving bans and 180 hours of unpaid work were also handed down.

The judge told them: “You are extremely fortunate,” adding that the crash “could have led to death.”

Both players were nearly twice over the legal limit at the time of the incident.

Captain Richard Keogh suffered a serious leg injury in the crash, and could be out for up to 15 months.
