PHIL FODEN has urged England not to get caught up in the emotion before their historic Euro 2020 final.
The Three Lions face Italy in their first major final for 55 years at Wembley on Sunday.
Wednesday’s 2-1 extra-time semi-final win over Denmark wrote the squad into the history books, but Foden knows they cannot afford to get caught up in the occasion.
“There are going to be so many emotions with the fans,” he said. “The players have to stay focused and treat it like the first game of the tournament.
“Don’t change anything because we’ve been brilliant in every game. Hopefully we can get it over the line.
“It would be my proudest moment. Nothing can beat winning with your national team.”
The sentiment was echoed by manager Gareth Southgate, who when asked about the joy his team’s success has brought to the nation admitted, “it hasn’t really totally registered because I’m not reading those front pages and I’m not tuning into those bulletins.”
“But I’m noticing the journey to the stadium — the tooting of the horns, the flags on the cars, so I’m starting to get a feel of exactly what’s going on,” he added.
“And I suppose in the back of my mind I know what’s going on, but I’ve tried to put it to one side really and keep focused on what we’re doing.”
“I can’t be prouder to have the opportunity to lead my country, so to bring happiness at this time where it’s been so difficult for this period is a very special feeling.”
