Men's Football Frank Lampard's Chelsea get first home win of the season

FRANK LAMPARD secured his first home win as manager as his Chelsea side easily overcame a poor Brighton team.

In doing so, this youthful Chelsea squad, fast developing under new boss Lampard, also collected their first clean sheet of the season.

Jorginho put Chelsea on the way with a spot-kick after 50 minutes, following defender Adam Webster foul on Mason Mount in the penalty box.

Brazilian winger Willian clinched the win on 76 minutes after his powerful shot flew beyond goalkeeper Mat Ryan after taking a deflection off defender Dan Burn.

Chelsea did have numerous other chances to extend their lead as a deflated Brighton side struggled to keep up.

It meant Chelsea were back to winning ways after a defeat to Liverpool in the league last time around, which had followed two earlier draws at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, under a transfer embargo, have given opportunities to young players such as Tammy Abraham and Mount, both of whom have made an impact.

At the back, Fikayo Tomori looked solid at the heart of the defence.

The result left the Chelsea boss in a positive mood as he reflected on a dominant performance against the side from the south coast.

“We’ve been waiting for it,” said Lampard. “The reason we haven’t won at home is because we have not put together a 90 minutes at home to win. We have put together parts of games.

“We put in a good performance. It was solid, comfortable, professional, it lacked more goals because we created enough chances to score three, four, five goals, but we got our clean sheet, which is something we’ve been striving for.”

Graham Potter’s Brighton, who have not won in the league since the opening day of the season, remain on six points.

Brighton, who have scored just one goal in their last five league matches, rarely threatened Chelsea’s back line.

“We gave a goal away cheaply and then grew into the game but then gave a goal that killed the game,” said Potter. “We are disappointed, but credit to the opposition. Chelsea were good and we could not sustain any pressure.”

Chelsea play Lille in their Champions League tie on Wednesday before Sunday’s visit to Southampton.

Brighton face Tottenham on Saturday.
