Men's Football Reds through to Champions League quarter-finals despite loss

LIVERPOOL progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals despite a second-leg loss to Internazionale at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have faced tough tests against both Milan sides in this season’s Champions League and passed them both.

The stats will show a first defeat at Anfield for Liverpool since they lost to Fulham in March 2021, but the record books will show progress to the next round.

“Pete Krawietz [Liverpool assistant manager] always says the art of football is to lose the right games,” said Klopp.

“I still hate it but if there was any kind of game we could have afforded to lose, it was tonight, because the main target, obviously, of this competition is to get through.”

The Reds have now made it to the last eight in four of their five Champions League campaigns under Klopp. The last time they made the quarters prior to Klopp’s arrival was in 2009.

It shows how far they’ve come under the German, and they will now be aiming to reach their third final in five years.
