Rugby Six Nations: France v Scotland postponed over hosts’ Covid-19 outbreak

Scotland could be without 10 of their biggest stars if game is moved to a date outside of international window

SCOTLAND’S Six Nations trip to Paris on Sunday was postponed today after France reported another positive coronavirus case among their playing squad.

The game had been in major doubt all week following an outbreak among Fabien Galthie’s tournament favourites.

Organisers ordered daily testing before announcing on Wednesday that this weekend’s Stade de France clash would go ahead following a full sweep of negative results.

But less than 24 hours later they were forced to shelve the Saint-Denis showdown, with the entire Les Bleus squad placed into quarantine after the French Rugby Federation reported that an 11th player had contracted the virus.

The news will have come as a major blow to Gregor Townsend’s Scots, who fear they will be without 10 of their biggest stars if the game is moved to a date outside of the international window.

Under World Rugby’s player-release regulations, those based in England and France will be released back to their clubs for domestic duty once the window ends. The Six Nations’ rest week, a plausible time to hold the match, is not included in this window.

In a statement, the Six Nations said its testing oversight group had unanimously recommended the postponement and that its decision would be ratified later in the day by the tournament organisers’ council.

“We will be working on the rescheduling of this fixture and will communicate the date in due course,” the statement said.

France lead the Six Nations after away wins over Italy and Ireland. Scotland has one win and one loss.
