Sport in brief: December 21, 2021

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Manchester United have reopened their Carrington training base following its closure last week due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

United closed Carrington for an initial 24 hours eight days ago and their Premier League games at Brentford and at home against Brighton were postponed.

Four players and staff members had returned positive lateral flow tests following the 1-0 win over Norwich on December 11 and the results were confirmed by PCR tests a day later.

MEN’S CRICKET: Australia have called up uncapped seamer Scott Boland for the Boxing Day Test against England.

The decision to add him to the squad suggests management have some fitness concerns ahead of the Ashes in Adelaide this week.

Captain Pat Cummins is set to return after a seven-day isolation for a close contact with Covid-19 but Josh Hazlewood is in doubt as he continues to recover from a side injury.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Fulham have reported racist messages on social media towards winger Neeskens Kebano to the police.

Kebano was subjected to the abuse, which included racist words and emojis, on Instagram following the Cottagers’ 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Monday.

The 29-year-old shared screenshots of messages on his Instagram story and said: “Don’t worry guys, I am fine, I just wanted to expose the guy, things like that don’t affect me at all.”

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Bath have appointed Edward Griffiths as their new chairman following the decision of owner Bruce Craig to step down from the post.

Former Saracens chief executive Griffiths, who recently completed a review into the club’s dismal start to the season, begins the role on January 1.

Bath are 10 points adrift at the foot of the Gallagher Premiership and have yet to win in 10 games this season.
