Sport in brief: August 5, 2022

Men’s diving: Jack Laugher was full of praise after he sealed his second gold medal of the Commonwealth Games, winning the men’s synchronised three-metre springboard event alongside partner Anthony Harding.

In what is a relatively new partnership between the pair, they topped the leaderboard in today’s event with 438.33, winning by a massive 61.56 points.

Men’s football: Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is not worried about the desire of his players or the possibility of them being distracted during the first half of the season with the World Cup only a matter of months away.

Spurs begin their Premier League campaign Saturday at home to Southampton, but a break will occur during November and December with international football set to take centre stage.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was moved from its traditional summer slot due to the scorching heat of the country and will now take place in winter, but the former Italy boss has no concerns it will affect his squad.

Men’s football: Nottingham Forest have been charged by the FA after their fans invaded the pitch following their Championship play-off semi-final win over Sheffield United last season.

Forest beat the Blades on penalties after the two-legged tie ended 3-3 on aggregate to book their place at Wembley but there were unsavoury scenes as fans poured on to the pitch, with one of them headbutting United skipper Billy Sharp.

Forest season ticket holder Robert Biggs was sent to jail after his attack and other United players were involved in exchanges with Forest fans.

Men’s football:  Newcastle have given Eddie Howe a long-term contract less than a year after handing him the task of keeping the relegation-threatened club in the Premier League.

The 44-year-old former Bournemouth manager, who was appointed head coach at St James’ Park in November on a deal running until 2024, has been rewarded for his early success on the eve of the new campaign.
