Sport in brief: June 6, 2022

Men’s rugby union: Leinster scored 12 tries as they steamrollered Glasgow 76-14 to set up a United Rugby Championship semi-final with the Bulls, who needed an injury-time drop goal from fly-half Chris Smith to edge out the Sharks 30-27 in Pretoria.

Ulster will face the Stormers in the other semi after they beat Munster 35-17 and the South Africans overcame Edinburgh 28-17.

Women’s rugby union: Saracens produced a dominant performance to see off Exeter 43-21 in the Women’s Premier 15s final at Worcester on Saturday and regain the title they lost to Harlequins last year. 

Early tries from player-of-the-match Marlie Packer and Vicky Fleetwood put Saracens 22-7 up at half time en route to their third championship success in four seasons.

Men’s rugby league: With only half of the teams in action during the latest round of the National Rugby League (NRL) it was bottom club Canterbury Bulldogs who stole the plaudits with a resistant display before losing out 30-18 to table-topping Penrith. 

Manly Waringa thumped New Zealand Warriors 44-12, North Queensland won 32-6 at Gold Coast and Canberra held on to beat South Sydney 22-16.

Men’s rugby union: Cornwall retained the Bill Beaumont Cup, beating Cheshire 37-24 at Twickenham in a repeat of the last County Championship final. 

Will Trewin scored in the first minute before Cheshire had touched the ball and Cornwall built up a commanding 21-0 half-time lead. 

Cheshire hit back with two tries from captain Josiah Dickinson early in the second half but couldn’t stop the Cornish from claiming their fourth title in six seasons. 

Women’s hockey: Holland turned the tables on England at Lee Valley yesterday, overturning a deficit in the third quarter with two goals from penalty corners to win 2-1.

On Saturday, England had put in a positive performance to beat an inexperienced Dutch side 3-1 in the first of the weekend’s double header, their first win over Holland in regulation time since in 2003, with strikes from Anna Toman, Izzy Petter and Grace Balsdon.

Men’s cycling: Belgian champion Wout van Aert took the first leader’s jersey at the Criterium du Dauphine yesterday in a bunch sprint victory, edging out British rider Ethan Hayter and Sean Quinn of the US.

The eight-day race in south-eastern France is seen for many teams as key preparation for July’s Tour de France.

Time gaps are expected to open up in the first uphill finish on Tuesday, but the serious action among hopefuls in the general category will come in next weekend’s high-altitude stages.

Netball: The top four teams from the Netball Superleague went head-to-head in a third-place play-off and a grand final game at the Copper Box Arena in east London yesterday.

Team Bath beat London Pulse 36-32 in the the play-off and Manchester Thunder beat Loughborough Lightning 36-23  to be crowned champions for 2022.
