Sport in brief: March 31, 2022

TRANS ATHLETES: Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston feels sport must be a level playing field for all, but accepts there is an “uncomfortable journey” ahead in striving to deliver inclusivity for transgender athletes.

Huddleston said yesterday he accepted the issues were “a sensitive area” and one which must be approached with “a lot of care and love” to find the most inclusive outcome going forwards for each individual sport.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Scotland Women boss Pedro Martinez Losa is “open to all” solutions to their World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.

The Scots had been due to travel to Ukraine for the fixture on April 8.

Uefa rescheduled the game against Ukraine for June 24, the same month Scotland’s men hope to play their rescheduled World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine at Hampden Park, but there remains some doubt over whether either of those games will take place.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Egypt players including Mohamed Salah were targeted with lasers during their penalty shoot-out defeat by Senegal in Tuesday’s World Cup play-off.

Footage showed green lights visible on players’ faces as they stepped up to take their penalties in the crunch game in Dakar.

Salah missed the first spot-kick, while Mostafa Mohamed and Ahmed Sayed were also unsuccessful before Salah’s Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane scored the decisive penalty to book Senegal’s place in Qatar.

WOMEN’S GOLF: An ambitious Georgia Hall is targeting more major titles and a climb to the top of the world rankings following a superb start to the season.

Hall won the Saudi Ladies International by five shots earlier this month and has finished no worse than 26th in three tournaments on the LPGA Tour in 2022.

The 25-year-old from Bournemouth is therefore in a confident mood ahead of the first women’s major of the year, the Dinah Shore.
