FROM Amsterdam, to Madrid, to Paris, the impact of the Video Assistant Referee (Var) on the Champions League round of 16 has been enormous — and not in a good way.

Ajax saw Nicolas Tagliafico’s headed “goal” in the first leg of their extraordinary tie with Real Madrid, which they would go on to lose 2-1, disallowed. 

The referee had initially allowed the effort to stand, before officials went to the cameras and ruled an offside Dusan Tadic was interfering with Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, even though the former Chelsea stopper was unlikely to have reached the ball in time anyway.
