Ukraine Saakashvili: Ready to talk at his protest camp

UKRAINIAN police clashed with supporters of former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili yesterday at their protest camp outside parliament, a day after he was dramatically freed from custody in Kiev.

Mr Saakashvili refused to hand himself in to police but challenged prosecutors to come and interview him at the small tent city near the Verkhovna Rada.

“I will not show up at the pseudo prosecutor-general’s office,” he said. “I am ready to talk to investigators here in the camp.”

“Our plans are clear. Our main goal is to remove a criminal group from power and impeach it,” Mr Saakashvili said, referring to President Petro Poroshenko's administration.

Police raided the camp at dawn yesterday looking for the now stateless former Odessa governor, prompting fighting that left two protesters and 11 officers injured.

Prosecutor General Yuri Lutsenko has accused Mr Saakashvili’s representative of receiving $500,000 (£375,000) to finance regime change protests from Ukrainian businessmen with ties to Russia.
